How can I participate?
There are two ways to participate in the music on the hill. they are detailed as follows:
- If you are already a member:
- If you are already a member, it's very easy to get involved. You can sign up to play at either the TMB or the Nelson building, as there is music played nightly at the TMB building starting at 7pm, and music played throughout most of day at the Nelson building starting mid-morning. Both building show case music of all types: piano, guitar, fiddle, bass, electric and acoustic instruments (both venues have a snake on stage to plug your instruments into).
The Nelson building features a large seating area on the top of Steamer Hill with or various attractions inside the building and a core of musicians that play often. Each musician is allotted a time-slot on stage to play.
The TMB is located at the start of the Parade route at the bottom of Steamer Hill and features some stadium seating, a dance floor and a sound system with enough power to be heard even during the occasional torrential downpour on the Hill. The TMB also features an air-conditioned backroom for musicians to rehearse or store their cases or or gear.
Both buildings offer assistance from the sound technicians if you need help setting up your equipment with the house-audio system.
In addition to these two venues on the showgrounds, there are countless other locations where musicians congregate to play music - You can usually find music on main street near the print shop, gazebo, mercantile or any location where people pass by. At the end of the day, you can always find music being played in the Blacksmith Shop, typically until the wee hours of the morning at times.
If you have questions, you can certainly check in the Administration building to locate the Music Co-Chairs, of come up to one of the sound-booths at the TMB or Nelson and have your questions answered. We are always looking for more individuals or groups to play music, no matter what your age or skill-level is. Any and all related music is greatly welcomed on the Hill. - If you are not a member:
- If you are not a member, it's very simple to participate in the music program - Simply contact a Sound Tech in the TMB or Nelson. By becoming a member, you not only join a special group of people that feel strongly in the preservation of this historical period in time, but you also gain a large extended family consisting of hundreds of active members that share a common interest.
